Setting a home town

The main web page of this website has a list of races near Oxfordshire and their results. Here's an example of an advert for a race:

The main web page of this website enables you to set a preference for your "home town" that is used for each visit to the web page. If you do this, then each advert on the web page also has a "journey there" section that (a) reports how far the race is from your home town and (b) has links to maps showing you how to get to each race. An example is shown in the image above.

Since its beginning, the web page has enabled you to choose from a list of 19 home towns: Abingdon, Aylesbury, Amersham, Banbury, Bicester, Chipping Norton, Cirencester, Didcot, High Wycombe, Marlborough, Milton Keynes, Newbury, Oxford, Reading, Swindon, Thame, Towcester, Witney and Woodstock. On January 16th 2018, I added 10 more home towns: Bourton-on-the-Water, Calne, Cheltenham, Chippenham, Evesham, Eynsham, Gloucester, Marlow, Stratford and Stroud. And on January 22nd 2018, I added 3 more home towns: Brackley, Broadway and Silverstone.

To get this website to set a home town, go this website's main web page and click on the button labelled "show preferences area". It's at the top right of the web page. If you do this, a new bit is added to the screen with a mainly dark yellow background. In Section 2, select a town, e.g., "Eynsham", from the drop down menu labelled "select a home" and then choose something from the drop down menu labelled "select a distance". I usually choose "any distance". A new button labelled "show distances from Eynsham" should appear. Click on it. Then click on the "hide preferences area" at the top right of the web page.

Having set the home town, you should now find that each advert in the list of races has the "journey there" section. It not only gives the distance by road from the home town to the race but it also has three links labelled "OS", "OSM" and "Google" that you can click on if you wish to see a map of how to get to the race by road.

If you do set a home town, then this website will use cookies to store this preference. Although cookies have been used by websites for many years, a change to the UK law in May 2011 means that a website now has to ensure that you agree to cookies being created. If you wish to change your mind, you can remove this preferences and get rid of these cookies by clicking on the "show preferences area" button again and then clicking the "remove current preferences" button.
