2019 Rugged Radnage 10K

As no races are taking place at the moment, I'm creating some web pages entitled "where I was taking photos this time last year". Today, I'm looking at the Rugged Radnage 10K which takes place around Radnage which is about "5 minutes from junc 5 on the M40".

The organiser's website says "The Rugged Radnage 10K is a challenging mixed terrain 10K race, in the Chiltern Hills. The course involves sections on road, trails and footpaths; through woods and fields and includes off-road descents and ascents." The 10K has been held each year since 2010, and, since 2018, there has also been a 5K but I don't take photos of the 5K. Last year's races took place on Sun Nov 17th 2019 and this year's races were to have taken place today (Sun Nov 15th 2020). Unfortunately, because of Covid-19 it has been postponed until Spring 2021.

By the way, you can click on any of the photos on this web page to see the photo in hi-res.

The route of the race

map of the race route.
The above map is taken from the organiser's website.

The race is on tarmac for the first 1K but then shoots down an often wet, stony path through woods. Just before 2K, it joins a hard-core track for the next 2K. At just before 4K it turns right and goes up a path through woods. This is the steepest part of the course. When I ran the race in 2010 there was loads of mud at about 4.5K. This is the prettiest bit of the race - the bit from 4K to 6K is in Crowell Woods. Just after the water station at 6K, the route is tarmac until 9K using lanes through Radnage. At 9K, there is a slight downhill followed by a steep uphill along grass. This is tough to do in the last K of the race!

I did the race once in 2010, its augural year. My notes from 2010 say "In the announcements before the race, we were warned that the K markers might be inaccurately placed and the race might be a bit longer than 10K but my Garmin didn't bear either of these out. She also said there may be mud! Well there was a lot of mud, especially in the woods. There were also numerous large puddles on the tracks and the roads. Most people near to me walked the two killer hills: there was one at 4K and the other one was at the start of the last 1K. These are obvious from my 0.5K splits (given below). Between 4.5K and 6K I managed to get some fast running done even though this was on uneven muddyish tracks through woods and I continued this fast running on tarmac between 6K and 8K. I got 1.47 times the winner's time which I'm pleased with. There were lots of marshals: they were enthusiastic and well positioned. The bacon roll and coffee at the end went down well as it was quite a chilly (although dry) day." The 2010 results say I did it in 57m36s. My 0.5K splits were "2m26s, 2m32s, 2m26s, 2m19s, 2m41s, 2m43s, 2m59s, 4m45s, 3m43s, 2m24s, 2m25s, 2m27s, 2m18s, 2m26s, 2m32s, 2m28s, 2m28s, 2m42s, 4m23s, 3m55s, 0m31s (0.12K)".

Postscript

If you did the Rugged Radnage 10K in 2019 and want a reminder, then here's a link to all the photos that I took. There's a calculator on that web page that makes it easy to find the photos of a runner given their time and you can find the time from the results web page.

If you want to see the reviews I've done on other races, then here's a link to a web page that includes an index of the reviews of races.

I maintain a web page for runners that provides a list of races near Oxfordshire and the latest results. As well as a lot of postponed/cancelled races(!), it is now includes several races that plan to abide by the Covid-19 regulations. So go and visit www.oxonraces.com to see what races may take place. And if you use twitter, you may want to follow @oxonraces to become aware of important changes to this web page.

This web page is at www.oxonraces.com/blog/2020-11-15-radnage. It was created on Thu Nov 12th 2020 and last updated on Sun Nov 15th 2020.
